This week one of MAP untuk KAYA participant who been successfully started few ventures share her views and journey. So lets learn from it…..

Here goes the interview……

1)What kind of business do you have? What inspired you to become an Entrepreneur business owner?

I have a tuition agency which I call MyTutor Agency. I was a school teacher and is currently doing free-lance teaching. In 2006, when I was doing part-time teaching scheme in a mainstream school, I realized I needed extra cash to pay for my son’s chemotherapy treatment. I tumbled upon a tuition company which taught me the ropes of doing this business at a low cost of using it’s database. I was excited but the business comes with it’s own set of challenges. What’s important to me though is, this business does not take too much of my time and it does not give me any pressure…..I do it “Just for fun and to help others”.

This business is my side-line which could very well be my next BIG THING!

2)Did you need to have a certain mindset to achieve success?

It’s the hunger to earn more and live in abundance. Of course, there are setbacks that can put you down and pull you back from moving forward but I get composed fast enough to get back in business. I’ve learnt not to dwell on failures but to pursue successes at all times.

3)Have you noticed certain advantages to being an entrepreneur business owner?

Being my own boss, it’s up to me to decide how much earnings I want to get for myself. If I need extra pocket money for a period of time, I will work hard to achieve my goal.

For example, if I need $3000 this month for a vacation 3 months later, I’ll make plans to get that by setting achievable daily targets. This is my side income anyway but to set a goal and be able to achieve that, to me, the feeling is ….FABULOUS.

4)Is it difficult to get financing for businesses? If so why and are there any solutions?

Mine is a small scale business so I do not need to get financing help from anywhere. I can start this business with NOTHING, just guts and that winning mentality.

5)Did you have a mentor to help you get started?

Initially I did not. So for 3 year, my business was left unattended and I had very low morale and no intention to revive the business. I read so many books on self-motivation and building own business but it never happened. I was high in spirit and hopes but don’t know where to start. So, on retrospect, those times reading and building castles in the air becomes pointless and a waste of time to the point that I thought all these rich people are saying are pure crap.Talks of the capitalists!

Things took a change after attending Abang Abu’s MAP untuk KAYA in early 2009.

Abang Abu’s simple tips stick vividly in my mind until today. I like his theory of making $1 grow most. During the course, I was skeptical that a $1 can multiply exponentially. To me, that was IMPOSSIBLE. Now, looking back, it was possible and believable that $1 can multiply with certain strategy, effort and God’s help, mix into one. From that, I learnt that Abang Abu is trying to make us see that intangible existence can be a tangible achievement if we see the big picture of knowing your business.

6)Approximately how much money did you invest before your business became profitable?

Not much. I registered my company in 2006 with little money and then, I engaged a friend’s help to secure the domain name and do up a simple website at about $300. Twice a month, I’ll put up advert in the papers. That’s all. I get at least 20 times the profit from there.

7)What resources were most helpful to you when you were starting your business?

I come into the business with nearly 10 years of teaching experience.

That in itself is a plus point for parents to believe the kind of advice or consultation I give them as well as to tutors with regards to making the tuition effective and parents money spent worthwhile. I live by my belief in keeping the “edupreneur” spirit in me alive. I also have a committed and experienced pool of tutors whom I can rely on.

8)What ways have you found to be most effective in marketing your product or service to get sales?

The best marketing tool I have is my 800 pool of Facebook friends of whom, some are my clienteles, be it MyTutors or tutees. I believe that if you do a good job, clients will come back to you and spread the good word about your services and this will live by many years to come. I attribute 60% of my sale profits to this group of clients.

9)What tips can you give others who want to embrace their dream but, don’t have the confidence or feel they don’t have what it takes to succeed?

It’s totally ridiculous to believe that only those who can “ra-ra” and “who-ha” will survive in the business industry. There are many “Jutawan Senyap” lingering around us. You may choose what you want to become. All it takes is the first step to achieve success and the formula will run in your head somehow. If you follow this believe with me, I believe ANYBODY CAN BE RICH!

10)How do you manage juggling the responsibilities of being a entrepreneur?

Doing tuition coordination is a hobby. I treat is as spending my time wisely since I get to earn from it. Most people pay for their hobby but I get money to do my hobby and the feeling’s SUPERB! What’s interesting is, my 8 year old daughter is into this business. She gets to earn by helping me to work on the database following my instructions. She has been so successful to the point that my other 3 kids, aged 7, 5 and 4 years old are green-eyed and eager to learn this simple rope as well.

Sometimes, I have to crack my head a little when the request is complicated, something happens to the tutor or tutee during the course of the tuition or when there are no tutors willing to take up an offer. Time is money in this trade since once late, I’ll lose the business. So, I have a personal SOP for closing the deals.

11)What’s next for you?

I intend to strengthen MyTutor’s pool and only maintain the tried and tested tutors. With the great interest I see in my children in doing this business, I want to make this a family hobby which brings in side income in multiples.

I have plans to produce a book soon, insyaAllah. This book is about how my family is able to come out from the ordeal of hardship to the point of poverty where we were deeply in debt with the hospital of $60,000 when one of my son was diagnosed with cancer of the blood, leaukemia in 2004. It tells about the resilience we can be to overcome hardship and turn it into a life lesson and fight to pursue life to the best we can.

Ini adalah segmen Project $$ yang ketiga. Mahu bincang mengenai kad kredit.

AbangAbu merasakan bahawa adalah baik untuk anda  memintak pihak kad kredit anda memberikan potongan interest sekiranya anda mempunyai bayaran kredit yang perlu dibayar setiap bulan. Anda hanya memerlukan angaran satu jam sahaja dan waktu ini boleh menjimatkan jumlah wang yang banyak pada jangka waktu panjang.

Caranya amat mudah, cuma anda harus bersikap tegas dalam mendapatkan potongan.

Pertama, Anda dapatkan kad kad kredit yang telah anda gunakan dan mempunyai hutang kredit yang perlu di lunaskan dan belum dibayar sepenuhnya. Jika anda tidak pernah mempunyai hutang atau sentiasa membayar apa yang anda gunakan , sebarang potongan sukar didapati kerana anda bukan pelanggan yang membawa keuntungan kepada pihak bank, Sebaliknya jika anda sentiasa mempunyai kredit yang belum dibayar maka pihak kad kredit akan memberikan potongan kepada anda.

Setelah anda mendapat semua kad kad yang memang anda punyai kredit yang belum dibayar, sila dial nombor talipon yang tertera di kad tersebut. Anda harus berhubung dengan supervisor dan bukan operator sahaja. Anda harus meminta talian anda disambungkan kepada supervisor kerana selalunya pihak pertama yang menjawap panggilan anda  tidak mempunyai kuasa untuk memberikan apa apa potongan. Jika anda tidak diberikan peluang maka katakan kepada mereka anda ingin membatalkan kad kredit anda.

Kini anda boleh memberitahu supervisor yang anda inginkan potongan, kebiasaanya mereka akan mengurangkan kadar interest kepada anda, jika mereka tidak mahu berikan potongan , maka katakan kepada mereka anda ingin menukarkan semua kredit ke kad kredit yang lain yang memberikan kadar faedah 0% , ini selalunya akan menjadikan supervisor atau syarikat kad kredit ini memberikan kadar interest  yang lebih rendah. Jika taktik ini juga tidak menjadi maka beritahu mereka anda menghadapi kesukaran untuk membuat abayaran dan ingin interest dikurangkan , selalunya taktik ini akan membuahkan hasil yang baik. Jiaka semua taktik yang dibincangkan tidak diterima , maka ucapkan terima kasih kepada mereka dan letak talipon anda.

Dengan hanya melakukan semual proses diatasa ke kad kredit yang lain juga , anda akan dapat mengurangkan kadar interest yang boleh menjimatkan anda wang yang banyak.

Contoh, jika anda mempunyai kad kredit yang mempunyai hutang sebanyak $2000 denagn kadar interest 18.9% dan anda mendapat potongan kadar interest ke 12.9 . Ini adalah penjimatan sebanyak $120 dengan hanyasatu panggilan ke bank.

Jadikan sejam sehari anda, memberikan keuntungan jangka panjang dalam kehidupan serta kewangan anda.

Today , AbangAbu want to give a tip that will be very useful to make your business a HIT in your industry or area. Everyone would like to build a business that will be a hit. This tip is a very simple one and is important in building a long lasting business.

So AbangAbu believe in order to make your business a HIT ,you must have this HIT in you and business.

So here we go.

H = Honesty

AbangAbu realise than this is a very important element in making your business really hit. Honesty in provinding every single promise that you make to your clients or customers . By being honest to whatever things and being honest with everyone does really help you. AbangAbu had expiriences in this many times. And being honest will make people help you and also give you chances.

This will indirectly make yourself and your business a HIT with all of your customers and client. So choose to be honest in any situation that you might come accros. And also AbangAbu also had many times allows etended time for certain people just because of the honesty that they have.

I = Intergrity

The difference between honesty and intregirty in AbangAbu’s eyes is that honesty is more for others to see and intergrity is for oneself. In Business intergrity is a key element for long term success. Be true to you values and never do something that against your value even when you are in a difficult situations.

Don’t sell a product or service that you know that will never benefit the customers. I have many time come accross people that i coach and my clients that been given something that never benefit them in Insurance and othe investment products. I believe this type of people will lose their clients and future business.

So, keep in mind to have intergrity in whatever you do. A key to A HIT business.

T – Trust

Trust is so important to be build between the customers and the business, the employer and the employee, the boss and the staff , the supplier and the business.

By building a solid trust among these key links in the business. It will destined to become a HIT . Building trust is a journey and a skill. Being a friend , understand your customer and staffs and creating a powerful network will make your business a business that can be trusted.

Having people to talk about you to others is also showing about the important of building trust. This can bring you and your business very far. When people have that trust than as the owner you now carry a bigger responsibilities.

Having mentors and supporters that have trust in you is a key in making your business a HIT. AbangAbu have a few freinds and mentors that have 100% trust in me. When you know that they are people who trust you no matter what happen , will make you really work and strive to achive success.

The most important person that have the most trust in me is my wife. WIthout her trust in the time i were struggling , i wont be enjoying what i am enjoying now.

Trust from your family is critical for your long term success. Build it and dont do stupid things that can crash that trust .

Sure, tough economic times have major impact on buying habits. Pay attention to the shopping mall during prime shopping period. People are saving their way out of it. They focus more on value and results. Or, the time they spend to research on a product before buying increases.

The good news is, even if the recession is here to stay a bit longer, you can survive and prosper by following some of the tips below. Does recession always mean struggling to get the business going? No, don’t buy into the idea. Change your strategy and you’ll see that it isn’t a law like gravity.

Think of how to G R O W your business at this time by using GROW method.. so this week……

G = Get Organized

Get organized by looking back of your sales pattern and your customer based.

Remember the Pareto principle. 20 percent of your customers bring in 80 percent of your revenue. This number varies, it could be 20 percent that brings in 95 percent, but you get the point.

In a downturn, customers are more likely to go with a more trusted source. If you constantly build relationship with your existing customers, more power to you. Otherwise, it’s now the time to reactivate dormant accounts. Stay in touch and let them know if you are interested in working with them. Don’t hard sell and put any pressure on the first contact.

R= Reduce Budgets

By all means, don’t cut on marketing and advertising, but it’s fine to reduce budgets if appropriate. Creative marketers could use some of the low cost to free methods to keep their business out there. Think guerilla marketing.

If existing marketing efforts work fine, keep doing them but if cost is the problem consider them at smaller scales. Complement with other marketing strategies. It may work wonder with diversification

O = Offer Repackaged Product

Repackaging your products to make them available to small budget customers, you still want to emphasize on value and provide measurable results.

Your customers or clients are also looking for ways to cut cost. When business is good and you’re busy, you may have overlook some of the smaller customers who can’t afford what you have to offer at the price point.

Consider repackage your products or services so they become more affordable to another market segment. When business is slow, you need to search alternatives that put extra revenue in your pocket. This is what

W = Win Win Synergy

It may be the right time to team up with business partners to cross promote each other. It may be in the form of direct promotion or co-registration to save on name capturing efforts.
